What we’re like to partner with

Medicare Plan D helps beneficiaries significantly lower prescription drug costs. Although Plan D is available to all Medicare beneficiaries, the failure to purchase drug coverage through Medicare Plan C or Plan D can result in a late-enrollment fee.

Medicare Plan D supplements prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, Medicare Costs Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Accounts. Private insurance companies provide these Plan D policies, but the cost varies by provider and state. Anyone interested in enrolling in Medicare Plan D can do so during the Annual Enrollment Period that begins on October 15th, 2020, and ends on December 7th, 2020.

What Does Medicare Plan D Cover?

Medicare Plan D covers prescription drugs, but every provider's plan is different. While most Plan D policies cover a vast number of medications, each one has its formulary. A formulary is the list of drugs that are available for a specific plan. Within these formularies, drugs are placed in tiers. Generally speaking, drugs in lower tiers cost less than drugs in higher tiers.

A Medicare Plan D drug policy can make changes to its formulary during the year if the provider adheres to regulations set by Medicare. If this occurs, the provider must provide a 60-day written notice or a 60-day supply.

Formularies must include at least two prescription drugs in each category while covering most of the prescription drugs in the following protected classes:
  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotic
  • Cancer Drugs
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Immunosuppressant
